Lead Speech and Language Therapist - Neurorehabilitation

Job description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Leadership and Service Delivery:

1.1 Demonstrate strong leadership skills within the senior team, contributing to the overall service delivery and Quality Improvement initiatives.

1.2 Oversee and manage the speech and language team, ensuring the effective delivery of highly specialized Speech and Language Therapy services.

1.3 Maintain and develop the high-quality Speech and Language Therapy service, adhering to professional standards, evidence-based practice, and clinical audit programs.

1.4 Provide advanced specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessment and treatment for patients with complex neurological impairments and acquired brain injuries.

1.5 Foster a culture of openness, person-centered care, and continuous learning within the service.

1.6 Serve as a role model, displaying appropriate leadership conduct and behaviors in line with organizational values.

2. Clinical Expertise:

2.1 Conduct expert-level assessment, treatment, and outcome measurement for patients with complex neurological presentations.

2.2 Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment interventions using valid and reliable outcome measures.

2.3 Perform advanced-level assessment and treatment for patients with complex swallowing disorders, utilizing specialized techniques.

2.4 Use clinical reasoning skills to determine appropriate care pathways and options.

2.5 Develop and oversee individualized treatment programs and goals, providing specialist advice to the interdisciplinary team.

2.6 Provide leadership in swallow assessment, treatment, and weaning support for patients with tracheostomies.

2.7 Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills in specialist areas.

3. Service Development:

3.1 Ensure the Speech and Language Therapy service aligns with national initiatives and policies, emphasizing clinical governance and evidence-based healthcare.

3.2 Support the team in implementing policy and service development changes.

3.3 Lead and support team members in audit activities and research, collaborating with the Head of Therapy and Hospital Director.

3.4 Initiate, lead, and support interdisciplinary team service developments in consultation with other service leads.

3.5 Provide specialist clinical training to team members and contribute to strategic projects and business planning.

4. Managerial - Staffing:

4.1 Develop the structure of the Speech and Language Therapy team based on evidence-based practice.

4.2 Ensure staff receive regular clinical supervision, annual appraisals, and personal development plans.

4.3 Lead recruitment processes for Speech and Language Therapy staff.

4.4 Collaborate with department leads for the development of new posts.

4.5 Participate in the supervision and appraisal process of other team members.

5. Managerial – Resources:

5.1 Ensure appropriate monitoring and ordering of Speech and Language Therapy stock within budgets.

5.2 Oversee the maintenance of therapy equipment in line with health and safety policies.

5.3 Stay informed about equipment and resources for neurorehabilitation.

5.4 Build links with local community providers for post-discharge resource provision.

6. Managerial – Senior Team:

6.1 Actively participate in center management meetings.

6.2 Support Lead Therapists and Head of Therapy in coordinating and delivering equitable therapy services.

6.3 Communicate complex service-related information to senior managers and staff using negotiating and persuasive skills.

6.4 Attend regional and group meetings as a service representative.

6.5 Contribute to the writing of policies and procedures.

7. Research, Learning Development, and Audit:

7.1 Manage and develop the annual audit program for Speech and Language Therapy.

7.2 Contribute to center-based audits and stay abreast of evidence-based practice.

7.3 Ensure service standards align with national standards and best evidence.

7.4 Provide specialized teaching and present in the specialist area at conferences.

7.5 Participate in local research projects within the clinical role.

8. Health, Safety, and Safeguarding:

8.1 Practice the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all individuals.

8.2 Comply with safeguarding procedures and complete all relevant training.

10. Mental Health Act:

10.1 Comply with the Mental Health Act in relation to patient care and rehabilitation.

11. General:

11.1 Maintain a detailed working knowledge of relevant legislation and adhere to professional codes of ethics.

11.2 Develop and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.

11.3 Conform to company policies, including confidentiality and administrative responsibilities.

11.4 Support all quality initiatives and objectives within the organization.
