Family Support Worker

Job description

Job purpose:

  • Providing a broad range of services with the aim of supporting families by improving family relationships, improving parenting and breaking negative cycles.
  • Promoting positive and healthy outcomes for children and young people.
  • Ensuring safeguarding at all times.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing a service to children and families which will improve outcomes for all children.
  • Contributing to planning, delivering and evaluating work with children and parents, both in groups and individually, providing a stimulating and caring environment which enhances and promotes the child’s all round developmental needs.
  • Providing practical parenting support to families through home visiting and outreach work and undertake direct work with children and families around issues identified by agencies in response to a variety of situations that may arise, using a recognised parenting programme.
  • Setting individual targets and programmes of intervention in relation to assessments, offering support and advice to meet these needs either within home visits or group work.
  • Working in partnership with parents/families and other professionals to support and encourage parents to identify ways in which difficulties may be overcome.
  • Delivering agreed programmes of parenting support.
  • Taking personal responsibility for maintaining confidentiality in line with Havering’s policies and procedures.
  • Holding a caseload of complex and non-complex cases and attend Court to give information on specific cases as required dependent on competence/experience.

Requirements:

  • A relevant practice qualification in childcare, education, health or social care.
  • 2 years minimum experience working with young children and families.  
  • Experience of preparing reports and assessments in respect of children this may include presenting to Court
  • Experience of working with families on practical parenting tasks and delivering parenting programmes.  
  • A qualification in First Aid or the willingness to train and acquire the qualification.
  • An ability to travel between Local Authority sites within the London Borough of Havering.
