5 steps to choosing the right recruitment agency

With nearly 40,000 agencies in the UK, picking the right one to work alongside can be tricky.

So, you're looking for an agency to provide your business exceptional candidates but not sure what service is right for you? Need some help deciding? Read on to find out what you should be thinking when deciding on a recruitment agency.

What's the vacancy?

An obvious place to start, wouldn't you agree? Recruitment agencies generally specialise in certain sectors and in temporary or permanent roles so identifying your needs from the offset is the most important factor to consider.

What type of agency is right for you?

Depending on the vacancy, some services may be more relevant than others. There are essentially four different types recruitment agency

  • Temp agencies
  • Traditional agencies
  • Executive search agencies
  • Niche/Specialist agencies

Nowadays, many agencies (much like ourselves) now do all of the above and if you need to tick all four fundamental boxes, it's definitely worth finding an agency who can offer it all.

Do you need a local recruitment agency?

This is a great question and one of my favourite myths to bust. Many agencies recruit nationwide and irrespective of where they're based, a lack of local presence shouldn't be a barrier to using a particular service. Thanks to the internet, we all have access to the same roles so no, using a local agency isn't necessary.

Should cost be a factor when choosing an agency?

Some agencies charge on a percentage basis, some on a flat fee so it's not likely trying to find the cheapest service will work out. Fees are generally around 15 - 20% across the board and those percentages don't deviate too much. So we'd say not to make your decision based on financial factors.

What's the background of the recruiter?

Recruiters websites (in particular their 'About Us' sections) will give you a good idea of their direction and what they're passionate about and where their experience lies which is a hugely helpful indicator as to how effectively they can help you fill your vacancies. There will also be a 'Meet The Team" section so you'll be able to get to know the consultant in particular who will be your point of contact.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right recruitment agency is something that should be done meticulously and thoroughly. Choosing an agency is easy but choosing the right one for you is a process.
