Job description

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting housing advice interviews with local private sector residents focussing on preventing homelessness and giving good quality advice on the potential avenues to resolve problems and on housing choices available so customers can make informed decisions about their options.
  • Advising on all matters relating to landlord and tenant disputes and to negotiate with landlords to prevent homelessness and provide practical assistance to help customers remain in their accommodation or move to alternative accommodation thereby preventing homelessness.
  • Providing the above through a detailed knowledge of housing legislation and case law including landlord obligations and a good knowledge of welfare benefits and rights.
  • Advocating for customers including court representation in possession proceedings and injunction applications.
  • Developing and sharing a comprehensive network of contacts across the public, private and voluntary sectors to improve partnership working.
  • Ensuring that all contact with customers and other organisations is fully recorded and where possible confirm advice given in writing.
  • Developing and maintaining positive relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and communities to ensure the council and the directorate strategic priorities are effectively implemented.

Requirements:

  • Experience of working in a demanding environment with a clear attention to detail.
  • An understanding of the rules, procedures and practices of the county courts.
  • A good understanding of the services available to customers seeking help to retain their current accommodation or to find alternative accommodation as provided by other organisations, both statutory and voluntary.
  • An understanding of the benefit cap, universal credit, rules in relation to local housing allowance and housing benefit.
  • An understanding of the law in relation to Houses in Multiple Occupation, additional and selective licensing and the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.
  • Enhanced DBS dated within the last 12 months. On the update service? You could be fast tracked through our recruitment process today.
  • Willingness to complete an enhanced DBS if you do not currently hold one.
